제가 가끔씩 올리는 "쨰려보는 눈길"의 사진들은 사실 피사체들이 크게 싫어하거나 공포감을 주거나 그런 상황이 아닌데요, 이번사진은 "실제상황" 입니다.  

이곳은 Puerto Rico 의 수도 San Juan 에서도 La Perla (진주) 라고 불리우는 아주작은 마을인데요, 이곳은 가장 못살고, 또 가장 위험한곳이라 합니다.  세상의 나쁜일들은 이곳에서 다 일어난다고 하더군요.  예전에는 경찰들 조차 들어가기 꺼려했답니다.

    뒷모습이 요새 끌려서 그런지, 아름다운 해안 마을과 순찰 사진에 더 눈이 가네요.
    하지만 최고는 유타베님의 자화상이 숨겨진 마지막 사진.
    나 좀 찍어보려니까 저기 좀 비켜주시겠어요? 라고 말해도 될 만큼 주인공이심. ^^;

    사실 저 주민들을 찍고 싶었는데요, 막상 걸어가다가 사진기를 들기가 무척 어려웠읍니다.
    거울이 있는것을 보고, 저것을 핑계삼아 찍으면 되겠다고 생각했죠. 무어라 그러면 나는 그저 내모습을 찍는 중이라고 돌려댈려고요.
    그들은 자신들이 찍히는것 보다, 이곳에 사진을 찍으면 안된다고 우려의 한마디를 해주었읍니다.
    아무래도 그동네에서 불법으로 행하여지는 일이 많이 일어나보아요.

    인테넷을 찿아보니 아주 슬프고 아픈 역사가 있는 아주 작은 마을이군요,

    대충 600m 남짓의 아주 작은 마을인데..  19세기에 도살장, 노예들, 집없는 non-white servants, 그리고 공동 묘지 등등이 모여 생긴 곳인데,  도심을 둘러싸고 있는 담 밖에(outside the city walls) 있는 마을이라네요. 어쩌다 그런 악명을 갖게되었는지.. 역사의 안타까운 흔적입니다.

    또 궁금해서 알아보셨군요.
    관광객도 많고, 보잡한 거리가 이동네 바로 옆에 있읍니다.  이곳을 들어가려면 계단으로 내려가야 하는데, 들어가자 마자 화려한 거리와는 완전 다른 별천지.  저는 모르고 들어갔기에 정말 깜짝 놀랬읍니다.  해변을 바로 옆으로 하고 있어서 재개발하는 사람들이 싹 밀어버리고 휴향지로 만들고자 했답니다.  
    개발이 안되었기에, 그들의 생활과 문화가 더욱 보존이 되어있죠.  저는 이런곳의 방문이 참 좋아요.

    말씀하신대로 공동묘지가 멋지게 있읍니다.  제가 얼마전에 보여드린 묘지 사진이 이곳에서 찍은것 입니다.

    제가 뉴욕에서 고등학교 다니던 70년대 초중반에는 중산층 동네와 저소득층 동네 아이들을 섞어 교육시켜야 한다는 liberalism이 우세해서 주로 Puerto Rico 출신 사람들이 살던 동네에서 일부러 학생들을 버스에 태워 제 동네 학교에 데리고 와서 같이 공부하게 했습니다.

    이상주의 정치가들이 꿈꾸던 그런 멋진 화합이 이루어졌을까요?

    별로 기억하고 싶지않은 시절입니다.

    아, 모임의 힘이란 게 이런 거군요. 여러 사람의 여러 정보와 생각을 듣고 다시 사진을 보니,
    다른 모습들이 보이고, 다시보게 됩니다.
